The practice nurses are highly trained and it is possible to make appointments with them directly for routine smear tests, contraceptive advice and HRT checks. The nurses also run asthma, hypertension and diabetic clinics in conjunction with the doctors.

Practice nurses have a vital role in supporting your doctors in the service they give you, and the daily work of the nurses is planned with this in mind. For this reason there cannot be open access to the practice nurses who are able to see patients by appointment in the following circumstances.
Walsingham Surgery has access to a practice nurse.
We also have a duty nurse each day offering 5 minute appointments from 8:30-18:30 who can deal with many conditions which are urgent for that day. The nurse will be able to arrange a prescription if necessary, and can also arrange a GP appointment if needed. Please note that patients wishing to see the duty nurse will be triaged by a clinician in the first instance.

The duty nurse can deal with:
– Minor illnesses (that can not be treated with self-care)
– Minor injuries
– Ear, nose and throat problems
– Respiratory disorders such as asthma /bronchitis
– Skin conditions
– Contraceptive advice
– General Health advice

The nurses are unlikely to be able to deal with the following conditions and you should ask to see a doctor:
– Unwell newborn babies under 3 months old
– Abdominal pain
– Testicular problems (pain, lump etc)
– Breast lump
– Rectal bleeding
– Vaginal bleeding
– Pregnancy complications
– New episode of depression or anxiety
– Headaches
Community nurses attached to the practice care for patients in their own homes, mainly the housebound and chronically sick and may also see patients at the surgery.

Healthcare Team

Community midwives help your doctor with pregnant women’s care and hold a booking clinic at the surgery every Monday & Wednesday (Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital) and Friday (Queen Elizabeth Hospital). They form an integral part of the continuing care of expectant mothers.
Your doctors have direct access to the services of a chartered and state registered physiotherapist working from their own room in the surgery, should they decide to refer you for such treatment.
Health visitors can give advice on healthcare, particularly to expectant mothers, small children, the elderly and disabled people. They see patients at home and at Meditrina House (Fakenham Practice).
If your doctor recommends a course of counselling, you will be referred to one of the accredited counsellors with whom the practice contracts for this service.
